Allstate Insurance Plans, a gadget protection provider, has recently released the results of its annual device drop tests, which saw some of the most expensive smartphones, including the iPhone 15 Pro Max, endure significant damage.

The drop and water resistance tests involved high-end phones, including the $1,200 iPhone 15 Pro Max, the $1,200 Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, the $1,799 Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, and the $1,799 Google Pixel Fold. These smartphones, known for their premium features, are constructed with glass exteriors.

In these tests, Allstate submerged each smartphone in water for 30 minutes and then subjected them to a drop from a height of six feet onto a concrete surface using a specialized apparatus.

While these smartphones generally held up well in the water resistance test, showcasing their impressive water-resistant ratings, they didn’t fare as well during the drop test.

In the front screen-down drop test, both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra suffered severe damage on their first drop, rendering them unusable with shattered glass. The expensive Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Google Pixel Fold managed to survive two screen-down drops but exhibited frame damage, screen dents, and scuffs. This resilience is attributed to the raised lip around the inner edge of their displays. However, when dropped on their closed outer displays, both these phones also experienced screen damage.

In back-down drop tests, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra suffered immediate damage. The iPhone 15 Pro Max remained functional, but two of its cameras were rendered inoperative due to damage to the camera glass.

Allstate Insurance Plans has conducted these tests for several years, focusing on each new iPhone generation. Despite Apple’s efforts to strengthen the glass, it appears that glass remains prone to breaking when subjected to such impacts.
